It’s sort of a ritual.. All of the the devices humming and me sitting on the floor.. A rack full of electronics and cables like a modern totem pole, just outside the circle of the keyboards. A dream maybe, a distant idea of something or just pure exploration, endless curiosity about the sound..
After initial preparations the feelings begin to form, feelings that have no name. Delicately jamming with some sequenced sound the mind tunes up and new things choose to appear. A certain wholeness consists of numerous, seemingly not at all connected details, all building and dressing up the feeling but never quite reaching it. Always a new space comes up, a new scale of reference even more microscopic than what was before.
From the randomness rise structures, or, the structures try to interpret the randomness, together they commence a dialogue. The dialogue deepens and reaches an understanding, the feeling and the sound are as close as the can possibly be. There’s always a point of satisfaction. The sounds serve a cause, the feeling, which gets stronger through the sounds and the dialogue. One has to accept that they are no further able to approach with the given set of possibilities presented at the given time.
It’s a lengthy and precise process. Sometimes for a whole day the tune and sounds just loop around the climaxing moment. The sound becomes part of the day and it’s events. Once in a while a little adjustment, maybe changing the frequency of some detail. A complex entity of sounds, some of them sustaining the others or themselves. A complex set of triggering impulses, which live by the overall material but not quite precisely, sort of setting the limits of the sound in which it lives it’s own life..
The map is now finished and a path awaits taking.. The ending being ready it’s time to set all down for the beginning, and start traveling. The final details are never known, every time they appear a little differently. It’s not about having the total control of everything, it’s more about constantly getting surprised, living the perceived feeling from start to finish as if experiencing it for the first time. Usually the final combination reflects the same order of appearance than in the original phase of exploration. The feeling builds up, lingers in the climax touching something deep inside, and fades away. Or, it doesn’t fade, but it becomes an essential ingredient of the experience.
The reality seems like it is the same that was before, but something has changed now, as if entering it from a new angle. Eventually this new angle, a state of mind, forms the base for the next session. Never quite returning to the same place, always traveling deeper and deeper into the reoccurring structure, that seems to be organized like the infinitely repeating patterns of a fractal.
